Kinky Friedman-Proud To Be An Asshole From El Paso

Kinky Friedman

A film by Simone de Vries

Documentary (2001) about the Jewish-Texan singer/(song)writer Kinky Friedman, a man with a
very strong image: always wearing a black Stetson and a big (Cuban) cigar in his mouth.
He was a countrysinger in the 1970's and founder of 'The Texas Jewboys', with famous songs like: 'They ain't making Jews like Jesus anymore' and 'Ride 'm Jewboy', the first countrysong about the holocaust.
Nowadays Kinky Friedman is a writer – he fled New York in the 1980's to live in Texas again on a lonely ranch – of mystery novels, starring himself as a Jewish, cigar smoking detective. He has written 14 of them and has grown a little tired of doing it. He travels the world to promote his books and his latest CD. This ‘tribute’ album became a cult-success because of the covers by Willie Nelson, Tom Waits, Dwight Yoakam and many more. Will he dare to write that 'Great American Novel' after all, or is he better of as the politically incorrect cult-hero he is today?
Starring Kinky Friedman, Willie Nelson, Lyle Lovett and Bill Clinton.
